Wembley
Cultivating a Greenhouse-Inspired Transformation of a 1930s Wembley Home, Blending Modern Design with Sustainable Living.
A 1930s Deco-era home in Wembley has been beautifully restored for a young family, seamlessly blending classic charm with modern living. The restoration preserves the original front bedrooms while updating the bathroom to contemporary standards. Strategic removal of existing walls allowed for the creation of a study space off the hallway and additional storage, extending the hallway into a new open-plan area at the rear. This space opens to a north-facing courtyard, where overhangs provide shade in the summer while allowing winter sun to warm the burnished concrete floors.
The roofline was reimagined with eaves overhangs and a simplified flat pan metal form, offering iconic simplicity. Thin black metal columns and a light concrete verandah float in front, creating a raised podium living space that engages with the front garden and street. A new scullery at the rear connects seamlessly to the kitchen, while a master suite and nursery at the back bookend the open-plan space, allowing family separation and unity in the home’s heart.
The extension embodies a greenhouse concept, with large glazing areas and delicate steel framing that invite the garden inside. A steel-framed pergola unifies the garden spaces, offering a beautiful outdoor living area. The garden features textured face brickwork paths, native and exotic plantings, and sustainable elements like a retained lemon tree and raised beds for growing food and raising chickens, emphasizing the owners’ commitment to sustainable living.
